Theme Studies
At Chance School, we blend children’s natural curiosity with relevant information and experiences, and enhance learning through organized theme studies. The structure of theme study exposes students to a variety of learning experiences in fun and meaningful ways, resulting in purposeful learning. This makes for an exciting journey that includes science, social studies, reading, writing, math, geography, technology, art, music, movement, field trips and guest speakers as each relates to the topic.
For preschoolers (twos, threes, fours), teachers plan themes that are most relevant to younger children’s lives: Seasons, Animals, Transportation, All About Me. The focus for preschoolers is to broaden their awareness, to provide lots of enriching experiences, to give them words for things in their lives.
As students mature and become more independent at the elementary level (kindergarten through fifth), theme study develops from a student-generated list of “What We Want to Learn About.” Topics might include the Human Body, Mexico, Natural Disasters, the United States, Dinosaurs, and Space, just to name a few. The next step is for students to formulate a list of “What We Want to Know About (their chosen topic).”
