The Preschool Experience
The preschool experience is all about separating from one’s parents and becoming part of a school group. It’s about coming to school excited about learning. It’s about being a thinker and doer, and an active member of the class. It’s about learning how to be a good friend. It’s about trying new things and making discoveries.
Children are placed in self-contained classrooms according to their ages as of October 1 of a given year. Two-year-olds are in age-specific groupings; three and four-year-olds have the options of age-specific or multi-age classes.
A typical day consists of:
- arriving at school and joining friends and teachers in the classroom
- putting personal belongings away
- choosing from center activities — blocks, pretend and dress-up, sensory and science, math manipulatives, writing, art, books, and listening
- participating in group times with stories, music, games and problem-solving; some with a literacy focus, others with a number sense focus.
- exploring beyond the classroom at the indoor or outdoor play areas
- enjoying a snack
- applying oneself with specialist teachers in creative movement and library time
