Learning and Development
At Chance School, assessment of learning and development is ongoing, strategic, and purposeful. The content of assessment is used to:
- benefit children in extending learning opportunities and adapting teaching strategies to meet the developmental and learning needs of individuals. It reflects progress toward important goals in cognitive, social, emotional, moral, and physical development.
- evaluate the program’s effectiveness for the purpose of offering the most outstanding developmental program in the area.
Authentic assessment of Chance students are based on multiple sources of relevant information. Authentic assessment tools include:
- Documented observations of children's development
- Portfolios of representative work by children
- Demonstrated performance during authentic activities
- Inventories and interviews
- Conferences
Additionally, the upper grades use these tools:
- Dialogue journals and learning logs
- Peer conferencing
Also, these summative forms of assessment are used in elementary grades:
- Screening in reading, writing and math
- Standardized testing
Assessment of Chance students is communicated to parents during scheduled conferences three times per year. Additional conferences are scheduled as needed.
