Laura Patterson

Art Specialist

I received my Master of Fine Arts Degree from Boston University in Art and Costume Design and my undergraduate degree from Louisville School of Art and Syracuse University in Art and Theatre Design. I served as the Resident Costume Designer at Actors Theatre of Louisville and Commonwealth Theatre Center for numerous years and continue to teach art classes each summer at CTC.

I have been teaching art to students for over 25 years. I have a strong passion for introducing children to the interactive world of art and creating an exciting environment that allows each child the opportunity to explore, wonder, and create. I blend my love of nature as well as my background in art, theatre, and mask design into many of my classroom projects. I create art experiences for my students that focus on process over product. I provide an abundance of art materials and tools to inspire artistic expression and genuinely value the thoughts and opinions of the children. Whenever possible, I engage in cross-curricular collaboration with the classroom teachers, so the work we are doing in the art studio is connected, authentic, and meaningful.

My husband and I met in high school and share a love of teaching art and theatre to young students. He is the Artistic Director of Commonwealth Theatre Center, and we have enjoyed collaborating on numerous projects over the years. When we are not working, we enjoy hiking, running, biking, and cooking with our two sons and two dogs. I feel fortunate to spend my days at Virginia Chance School, where art is valued, appreciated, and woven into every aspect of the curriculum.
