Chums Program
The Chums program is available before and after school on days that school is in session. While there is some flexibility, the Chums option is for students needing an extended school schedule on an ongoing basis.
Options are morning 7:30-8:30 a.m. and afternoon 3:00-5:30 p.m.
While the schedule remains flexible to take advantage of weather and special events, Chums program components include:

- center activities and projects that are age-appropriate
- playtime in the Funroom or on the playground in the morning and afternoon
- snack with organic milk or water provided by the school
- rest time for preschoolers during afternoon programs, allowing for sleepers to nap and non-sleepers to play quietly on mats for this designated period
- assistance with homework for elementary students, although many families prefer being involved with such assignments at home
Chums preschool participants
For the early-morning option, preschoolers will be in our cottage with quiet or active play. During the 3:00-5:30 p.m. option, preschool students are blended into multi-age groups of twos, threes and Pre-K (depending on health and safety protocols).

Chums elementary students
For the early-morning option, elementary students are in the Funroom, with quiet or active play. For the 3:00-5:30 p.m. session, students are in multi-age, elementary groups (depending on health and safety protocols).
Chums begins on the first day of school and continues until the last day of the fall and spring semesters. Chums is not available on days when classes are not in session due to holidays, school breaks, conferences or professional development days. Fees are incurred according to a child’s Chums schedule. Payments are made on a quarterly basis.
Time Offerings:
7:30am-8:30am
A great way to start the day! Come to the Funroom for basketball with friends or work a puzzle, play cards, or create a masterpiece. For our preschool students, enjoy quiet time in the cottage with friends.
3:00pm-5:30pm
Have a snack, work on homework, relax and play with friends.
Chance Chums Details:
Chums is organized by the Director of Extended Programs and staffed by Virginia Chance School staff and faculty. Students are grouped following safety guidelines and the appropriate ratios per age. Chums is not designed as a drop-in program to ensure a high-quality, cohesive program. The Chums option is for students needing an extended school schedule on an ongoing basis.

Chums is only available on school days and not available on days when classes are not in session due to holidays, school breaks, conferences, or full professional development days. Parents register a student by submitting the online registration form found on the FACTS site or the Campus Life section of the Chance website

Fees are incurred according to a student’s Chums schedule. Payments are made monthly.
Information regarding pick-up procedures will be provided with Chum's information sent before the beginning of the school year. Students must be signed out by the person responsible for their departure. A late fee of $1.00 per minute will be billed to anyone late for pick-up at 5:30p.m. closing.
Monthly Chums Rates: charged in total cost monthly increments. Yearly sign-ups go out in August or you may add coverage during the year. Monthly CHUMS charges will be automatically entered into FACTS Account and withdrawn by payment method set up on the FACTS portal.

Drop-In Rates: If your child is not registered in the regular Chums program but needs to attend Chums on a drop-in basis the following rates apply. If you are interested in drop-in registration, please contact [email protected]. 24-hour advanced notice is appreciated but we can work on the fly if we have enough coverage to accept drop-ins on that day.
