Dear VCS 4th and 5th Grade Families,
We are pleased to inform you about upcoming health education sessions that may interest you. The goal of the sessions is to provide developmentally appropriate health education to our 4th and 5th-grade students, which will include puberty and physical development.
VCS grandparent and local pediatrician will lead the sessions, Dr. Pat Purcell. Dr. Purcell has curated a list of resources that include the topics they will cover, and we have shared those resources below so that you may review them before the sessions.
The format of the sessions will go as follows:
Virtual Parent Google Meet: March 14th, 12:00
Meet with 4th-grade students: March 21st, 2:00-3:00
Meet with 5th-grade students: March 22nd, 2:00-3:00
For 4th-grade students, the topics will focus on body hygiene, body changes, and puberty stages for boys and girls. For the 5th-grade students, the topics will be a review of body hygiene, body changes, reproduction, and puberty stages for boys and girls, as well as answering questions that are on their minds. The topics for discussion align with the National Health Standards for 4th and 5th grade.
Teachers will collect questions by March 8th and give those to Dr. Purcell before the parent and student sessions.
The student sessions will be during school, so if you choose for your child not to attend, please let your teachers know, and we will have them proceed to the office for a 2:00 pick-up. You may want to preview the resources below then attend the parent session before deciding to have your child attend/not attend the sessions. Sessions will be co-ed.
Should you have any questions, I invite you to attend the Google Meet (information below) on March 14 with Dr. Purcell, Sue Musson, and me. These topics may be sensitive for some families. We hope that by providing this support, you will feel more confident and comfortable supporting your child during this next developmental stage.
