Charlotte Sorensson

Charlotte Sorensson brings more than 30 years of teaching experience, a deep understanding of early childhood development, and a warm, nurturing approach to her work as a preschool teacher at Virginia Chance School.

 

Born and raised in Sweden, Charlotte earned her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Lund in Sweden in 1995. Her Swedish educational background continues to shape her teaching philosophy, especially her belief in play-based learning, hands-on exploration, outdoor experiences, and the development of the whole child.

 

Charlotte and her family moved to Louisville in 2005, seeing it as a wonderful opportunity to experience a new country and culture. When she later toured Virginia Chance School and learned more about its philosophy, mission, and beautiful outdoor campus, she immediately recognized a strong connection to her own educational roots. Chance’s commitment to the whole child, nature-based learning, hands-on discovery, and meaningful play felt closely aligned with the early childhood approach she had known and valued in Sweden.

 

Now in her sixth year at Virginia Chance School, Charlotte takes pride in creating a classroom where children feel loved, seen, safe, and confident to play, explore, and learn. She believes young children grow best in an environment that is both nurturing and intentional — one where they are encouraged to wonder, ask questions, try new things, build relationships, and develop independence.

 

Charlotte sees play as essential to early childhood learning. Through play, children develop problem-solving skills, empathy, creativity, communication, resilience, and confidence. She loves seeing the world through her students’ eyes and finds great joy in helping them grow as capable, caring, and curious human beings.

 

Outdoor learning is especially meaningful to Charlotte. In Sweden, children spend time outside in all kinds of weather, and that value remains close to her heart. She loves exploring Chance’s outdoor campus with her students and sees nature as a powerful setting for discovery, movement, observation, imagination, and joy. For Charlotte, the outdoors gives young children space to strengthen their bodies, expand their thinking, and connect deeply with the world around them.

 

Charlotte also values the School of Compassion projects at Chance and the way they help even the youngest students begin to understand care, empathy, and community responsibility. She believes children are never too young to learn that their actions matter and that they can have a positive impact on the world around them.

 

Outside of school, Charlotte enjoys spending time with her family and friends, reading, traveling, and being outdoors. She has two wonderful sons, Erik and Gustav, who are now 27 and 25, and her family’s beloved rescue dog, Rico, remains at the center of their world. While Charlotte loves exploring new places, her favorite trips will always be the ones that bring her back to Sweden to visit family.
