Library & Media Specialist

I graduated cum laude from Bellarmine University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and a minor in Philosophy. I also attended Kent School of Social Work while working for a nonprofit organization that provided resources to individuals experiencing hardship. I have always felt drawn to helping others, especially children.

I discovered Virginia Chance School while searching for a preschool for my daughter. What stood out to me was the genuine care and compassion shown to students, along with the way children were encouraged to explore outdoors. A year later, I began my own journey at VCS teaching in a four-year-old classroom. I was fortunate to be mentored by longtime teachers who helped me understand the philosophy and intentional approach to supporting each child’s growth.

My professional experience includes 15 years at Virginia Chance School, including 12 years as Media Center Librarian, teaching experience in both 2’s and 4’s classrooms, technology instruction, enrichment classes, Chums, and summer camp. I am certified in the Lindamood-Bell Seeing Stars Literacy Program, and my professional learning has been shaped by Stephen Glenn’s Developing Capable Young People training, Reggio Emilia and Montessori approaches, outdoor and nature-based learning, global awareness and multiculturalism, STEAM education, and children’s literature.

Progressive education resonates deeply with me because it honors children as capable, curious learners. I believe positive relationships with children are essential, and my goal is to create a nurturing environment where children feel safe, valued, respected, and confident. I view the Media Center as an extension of the classroom and a welcoming space where students, faculty, staff, and families can come together to collaborate, strengthen relationships, and enrich learning.

I love books and believe literature has the power to inspire curiosity and imagination. I take pride in building a diverse library collection that reflects our school community, honors the experiences and cultures of our families, and encourages global awareness. I bring stories to life through read-alouds, flannel board stories, author studies, discussions, and multisensory experiences that invite children to engage deeply with literature.

Part of my work also includes thoughtfully integrating technology and hands-on exploration to help children observe, investigate, and better understand the world around them. After many years at VCS, I feel fortunate to continue being part of a community that values curiosity, creativity, and connection.

Outside of school, I can be found digging in my garden, reading and collecting children’s literature, exploring different teas and learning about tea traditions, spending time with my family, including my three children, all of whom graduated from VCS, and playing with my big Bernedoodle, Cookie.
