Position Summary
The Athletic Director & Physical Education Teacher leads a comprehensive movement and physical education program for preschool and elementary students, with an emphasis on outdoor learning, social-emotional development, and whole-child wellness.
This role includes teaching physical education classes, coordinating age-appropriate athletic and movement opportunities, and fostering a school culture that values collaboration, resilience, and joyful physical activity. The program is play-based and exploratory in preschool, and becomes more structured and skill-building in the elementary years.
Reports To: Director of Elementary Program, Auxilliary Program Director

Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
Plan and teach developmentally appropriate physical education classes for preschool and elementary students
Support motor skill development, coordination, teamwork, and sportsmanship
Use a mix of structured activities and play-based exploration, especially in early childhood
Adapt instruction to meet a wide range of abilities and needs
Integrate social-emotional learning, including cooperation, self-regulation, and confidence
Outdoor & Nature-Based Learning:
Incorporate outdoor environments into regular instruction whenever possible
Lead activities such as cooperative games, nature play, hiking, and movement challenges
Encourage safe risk-taking, problem-solving, and resilience
Support students in developing respect for and connection to the natural world
Athletic Program Leadership:
Develop and oversee inclusive, developmentally appropriate athletic opportunities
Organize events such as field days, fun runs, and intramural-style activities
Plan and lead additional community-building events
Emphasize participation, teamwork, and enjoyment over competition
Coordinate schedules, spaces, and equipment for all programs
Collaboration & Communication:
Work with teachers to support movement throughout the school day
Communicate with families about student progress and program activities
Participate in staff meetings, planning, and school events
Contribute to a positive, collaborative school culture
Safety & Program Management:
Maintain a safe and supportive environment during all activities
Monitor student health and physical needs
Maintain equipment and manage inventory
Ensure compliance with school policies and safety standards
Hold current CPR/First Aid certification
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Education, or related field
Teaching certification (as required by state/local regulations)
Experience working with preschool and/or elementary-aged children
Experience with outdoor, experiential, or play-based learning environments preferred
Strong organizational and communication skills

Ability to engage young children in active, positive movement experiences
Strong classroom and group management skills
Flexible, energetic, and collaborative approach
Appreciation for outdoor learning and child development
Commitment to social-emotional learning and inclusive practices
Working Conditions:

Occasional after-school or community events
