Debbie Wallace-Graham

First/Second Grade Teacher

Debbie Wallace-Graham brings a strong background in science, outdoor education, and hands-on learning to her role as long-term substitute teacher in Chance’s First/Second grade classroom this year.

Debbie earned her bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Louisville and discovered her passion for teaching through outdoor education programs at Jefferson Memorial Forest and Otter Creek Park. Those early experiences helped her see the power of connecting children with the world around them and inspired her to earn her Master’s in Teaching from Spalding University.

Debbie was drawn to Virginia Chance School because of its strong sense of community, beautiful outdoor campus, and commitment to student-led learning. She believes children learn best when their work is meaningful, intentional, and connected to their natural curiosity. In the classroom, Debbie strives to create an environment where students feel supported as they explore new ideas, solve problems, ask questions, and build confidence in their own abilities.

Her teaching approach aligns closely with Chance’s progressive model. Debbie values hands-on experiences, movement, outdoor exploration, and opportunities for students to take an active role in their learning. She loves watching children make connections, discover their strengths, and grow into lifelong learners.

This year, Debbie is excited to support the 1st/2nd grade classroom with warmth, consistency, curiosity, and care. She looks forward to helping students feel known, encouraged, and challenged as they grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

Outside of teaching, Debbie enjoys camping, hiking, practicing yoga, and spending time with her dogs. She loves being active and exploring the outdoors, and she is excited to share that sense of curiosity, movement, and adventure with her students.
