Jack Downs

Jack Downs brings a thoughtful, joyful, and academically grounded approach to his work as an elementary teacher at Virginia Chance School.

 

A two-time graduate of the University of Louisville, Jack earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science before completing his Master of Arts in Teaching in Elementary Education. His experience includes both formal and informal educational settings, including the Kentucky Science Center and, most recently, Harmony Elementary School, where he was known as a valued educator and strong contributor to the school community.

 

Across his teaching experiences, Jack has worked with children at a wide range of developmental stages and has taught across many areas of learning, including writing, scientific inquiry, mathematics, reading, and hands-on exploration. He believes it is a privilege to work with children and takes seriously the opportunity to help students build not only academic skills, but also confidence, curiosity, kindness, and a lasting love of learning.

 

His path to teaching was shaped by his own experience growing up in Bardstown, Kentucky, where he was influenced by teachers who nurtured his academic growth, encouraged his creativity, and modeled the importance of leading with kindness. Those early experiences helped inspire his own commitment to creating classrooms where children feel known, challenged, supported, and excited to learn.

 

In the classroom, Jack is especially energized by the moments when students make new connections, ask thoughtful questions, and begin to see themselves as capable learners. He works to build a classroom community rooted in trust, care, joy, and high expectations. He values leadership opportunities for students and believes children grow when they are invited to take ownership, collaborate with others, and engage deeply with meaningful work.

 

Jack’s teaching philosophy aligns closely with Chance’s whole-child, progressive approach. He believes children learn best when they are actively engaged in the learning process through hands-on experiences, inquiry, conversation, reflection, and discovery. This kind of learning helps students develop critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving skills, leadership, and confidence in their own ability to understand the world around them.

 

Chance’s outdoor learning environment is especially meaningful to Jack. As someone who finds joy and peace in nature, he values the way outdoor learning invites students to observe closely, wonder deeply, test ideas, and make authentic connections between the classroom and the world around them. He sees the outdoors as a powerful extension of the classroom and an important part of helping children grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

 

At Chance, Jack is committed to helping each child grow as a learner and as a person. He wants students to strengthen their academic skills, develop confidence in their thinking, and experience the joy that comes from curiosity, effort, and discovery.

 

Outside of teaching, Jack enjoys spending time with his partner, friends, and family. He has played violin for 16 years and loves sharing classical music with students. Around Louisville, he can often be found running, playing tennis, exploring the city’s parks, or enjoying nature. He also enjoys theatre, music, film, interior design, gluten-free baking, and cultivating both indoor and outdoor plants.
