Emily Hartgrove

Third/Fourth Grade Teacher

I hold a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Louisville, where I completed an accelerated program focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, particularly as they intersect with poverty. During this program, I had the opportunity to co-teach a first-grade classroom in JCPS. It was during this experience that I discovered my passion for teaching in collaborative environments, where multiple professionals act as facilitators.

Throughout my career, I have taught in various settings, including both private and public schools, as well as tutored and taught adult learners in corporate environments. Whether in the classroom or beyond, my goal has always been to provide equitable, culturally responsive instruction and meaningful learning experiences to support student growth. My heart, however, has always been in elementary education, and I am thrilled to return to this setting at Chance School this year.

I have chosen progressive education because I firmly believe it creates the best environment for students to grow both as learners and as individuals. The principles of community, collaboration, and intrinsic motivation naturally foster critical thinking and social justice. As students actively pursue answers to their own questions, guided by teachers along the way, they become more engaged in the learning process. They learn to problem-solve and collaborate with their peers. Virginia Chance’s focus on inquiry-based and nature-based learning perfectly aligns with these principles, offering students real-world opportunities to connect with their learning and engage with their surroundings. This approach helps students develop into active citizens and, ultimately, lifelong learners.

Nothing brings me greater joy than helping students thrive while nurturing curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning. I am excited about the opportunity to join this team of passionate educators and families to create meaningful learning experiences for our students.

Outside of the classroom, I enjoy cooking, gardening, and spending time with my family.
