Valerie Kinard

First/Second Grade Teacher

After earning my Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of the Pacific, I played professional basketball around the world, gaining the opportunity to experience a diverse range of cultures and perspectives. I worked as an Enrichment Teacher before returning to my alma mater to coach college basketball. Now I proudly call Chance School my home as I pursue my passion for Teaching. Being part of this community means a great deal to me because it truly values discovery and encourages kids to be exactly who they are.

I believe that learning should be meaningful, creative, and filled with joy. Creating a classroom where curiosity leads the way and every child feels seen, heard, and empowered to grow is at the heart of my teaching approach. I am especially drawn to the progressive philosophy at Virginia Chance, which honors the whole child and values student voice, exploration, and real-world connections. Our integrated outdoor curriculum allows students to learn through hands-on exploration beyond the classroom. We explore outdoors, tackle big questions, foster curiosity, encourage teamwork, and build resilience.

What I love most about teaching is using inquiry-based learning as the foundation to invite students to ask thoughtful questions, solve problems, and make connections that build skills they will carry with them for life. Through this, I am passionate about nurturing lifelong learners who are curious, confident, and ready to face new challenges.

Outside of teaching, I spend a lot of time with my husband, usually getting lost in a good video game. We love to travel and collect passport stamps along the way. I also enjoy getting wrapped up in a great book, staying active in whatever way I can, and always searching for new restaurants and local spots to try.
