Brooke Herron

Pre-Kindergarten Teacher

I graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science and a minor in Business Analytics. After graduation, I eagerly joined Chance School's before- and after-school program, where I engaged with young children and supported their development. This experience quickly led to a temporary substitute teaching position in Room 7 alongside the wonderful Mrs. Megan. Last year, I had the enriching opportunity to float among all the preschool classrooms at Chance School, observing and learning from some of the most dedicated and creative educators in the field.

This past summer, I further expanded my experience by working at an outdoor adventure camp for children aged 8 to 17 in the beautiful Smoky Mountains. In this role, I helped campers build resilience and independence through various outdoor activities such as rock climbing, hiking, and team-building exercises, all designed to foster personal growth and confidence.

Currently, I am pursuing my Child Development Associate (CDA) credential through Virginia Chance School while actively working in the classroom. My understanding of Progressive Education in early childhood continues to deepen. When I was first introduced to this child-centered and inquiry-based approach to teaching, I felt a renewed sense of joy in learning.

I particularly appreciate the integrated outdoor curriculum we implement at Chance School because it creates a dynamic learning environment that extends beyond the traditional indoor classroom. By encouraging children to learn through their senses—whether it's identifying different plant species, listening to the sounds of nature, or exploring textures in the soil—we help calm their minds and enhance their understanding of various topics. These immersive experiences allow us to base our curriculum on their natural curiosities and inquiries.

Chance School is a unique and welcoming community that I deeply cherish. Every day, I leave school with a smile on my face and my heart full, knowing that I play a part in shaping young minds. Outside of school, I enjoy immersing myself in live music, experimenting with eclectic foods, and exploring the beauty of nature through hiking in the mountains. I am excited to continue this journey of growth alongside my students and fellow educators.
