Debbie McLachlan

Community Engagement & Social Media Manager

Debbie McLachlan believes that the strongest school communities are built through meaningful relationships, shared experiences, and the stories that bring those moments to life. As Virginia Chance School's Community Engagement & Social Media Manager, she helps strengthen connections among students, families, faculty, and alumni by leading community engagement initiatives, partnering with the Chance Family Association, supporting admissions and school events, and sharing the authentic moments that reflect the life of the school. As the school's primary social media storyteller, Debbie works collaboratively across departments to celebrate the people, relationships, and experiences that define the Chance community.

Having previously taught in Chance's K/1 program, Debbie brings a deep understanding of the school's mission and the transformative impact of a whole-child education. Her experience as an educator allows her to recognize the moments of curiosity, confidence, resilience, and joyful discovery that make a Chance education so distinctive and share them in ways that celebrate students, teachers, and the community. Working alongside the admissions, auxiliary, and marketing teams, Debbie helps ensure prospective and current families experience the welcoming, connected culture that makes Virginia Chance School so special.

Debbie's academic journey began at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Education. That foundation launched a 17-year career in education, including seven wonderful years teaching K/1 at Virginia Chance School. Throughout her career, she has remained committed to creating environments where every child's potential is nurtured and celebrated.

Passionate about progressive education, Debbie embraces a whole child philosophy- recognizing that children thrive when they are supported not only academically, but also socially, emotionally, physically, and creatively. She believes in nurturing each child's individual strengths, curiosity, confidence, and sense of belonging while creating environments where children feel truly known, valued, and inspired to become lifelong learners.

Following her time in the classroom, Debbie returned to university and earned a Post Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Management, preparing her for her role as a Principal Teacher. In that position, she spent many years leading curriculum development, supporting educators, and strengthening school communities through meaningful family engagement—experiences that continue to shape her collaborative approach today.

Debbie's professional journey has also allowed her to combine education with creativity. She has authored two children's books, pioneered the establishment of a forest playgroup, and owns a small photography business, where she captures authentic moments and meaningful stories through her creative lens. A lifelong creative, Debbie brings a deep appreciation for imagination, beauty, and the unique perspectives of children and families.

Originally from Glasgow, Scotland, Debbie moved to Louisville with her husband, Angus, fourteen years ago. Together they have three children. Outside of school, she enjoys hiking, traveling, and photography.

Today, Debbie is honored to help foster meaningful connections throughout the Virginia Chance School community while telling the stories that celebrate its people and mission. She believes every child, family, and educator has a story worth honoring and is passionate about helping others discover the lifelong impact of a Chance education.
