Sarah Queen

Kindergarten & Primary 1 Teacher

I have a MAT in Elementary Education from the University of the Cumberlands and obtained my BS from the University of Louisville. I have been fortunate to be a member of the Virginia Chance School community since 2013 and have filled many roles in that time; parent, volunteer, substitute teacher, Chums teacher, preschool 2/3s teacher, student-teacher, and currently a K/1 teacher.

I was inspired to switch careers to education when my daughter, Mia, was enrolled in the 3s preschool program (she is now entering Intermediate 5). Seeing the positive impact that progressive education has had on her, as well as the kindness and joy expressed in the faculty and staff, was a motivation for me professionally.

I am passionate about whole-child education, learning through inquiry and interest, and seeing each child as an individual learner. I believe my role as a teacher is to encourage curiosity and wonderings, to know and understand each child as an individual, to build community within our classroom, and to make learning fun and exciting.

One of my favorite parts of Virginia Chance School is the beautiful natural outdoor space. It allows students to explore and learn in nature as well to encourage stewardship of our environment by experiencing and interacting in and with it. Building and harnessing compassion in our students is a key component in our educational approach, and our school-wide compassion learning projects allow students to learn and experience why this life-long characteristic is so important.

As my passion for learning continues, I continually look for ways to incorporate new ideas and interests into the classroom. When I am home, I enjoy reading, baking, and spending time with my husband, daughter, and two dogs.
