children here at chance school and she is our Tech specialist teacher so she's really knowledgeable person and I think it was Joyner Park today so we receiver Heights I just wanted to start Aaron and now I see somebody else has joined us would you just let me know who your student is and what what age were level there in just the way idea, as we get started hi my name is Sally Carter and my son is Henry he's in the three-year-old class my son is Kerwin and he is in the kindergarten oh yes okay by my side my son is in the other kids in the other kindergarten class so I I know Kerwin and I've seen them and then my daughter Lucy is in the in the third grade class. The pain started in the twos have one more baby who will join next year and the two so hi Andy how are you I'm leaving receiver on the technology specialist and we're going to talk a little bit about technology awareness and how to be mindful with our time ecology and create positive interaction if you guys have any specific questions or anything that's like on your on your mind right now for your family you can drop it in the chat or I'm just asked me, throughout though all right again alright so all right so this is talk today I I hope it will be super helpful it'll be a little different than just me talking to you about how many hours a day are kids should or should not be on their devices and then what specific app you know they should be on when Susan and I put this together we really wanted it to be more about that mindfulness with technology and how as a family we can be checking into that we're creating positive interaction but as we all know the reality of technology for ourselves but also our children's generation is that it's not going anywhere at this point and so we feel like that conversation really kind of needs to change from what are the rules for it and then just thinking about how we're constantly having those open conversations with our with her kids and ourselves around so we always like this little cartoon just because unfortunately especially with older kids if you're ever around a group of them kind of outside of school sometimes this is more of what we see and it's obviously not what we want to see if we really want to encourage that getting outside and getting outside without our spring so today we just the data and the research some of it you know I'm a bit maybe new and just how we can really be mindful about our technology uses usage and so what we do know about technology is that our phones are at the tablets everything we are using that our kids are using by Design they're addictive right in there these attention suckers that and you know a very hot topic right now is that anxiety in social media and mental health and how all of that kind of can go hand-in-hand and Cal Newport in in the book digital minimalism talks about how you know we've created this this dentist in my area and we're we're filling all of our in between times right now I have 5 minutes before this started and what was I doing I picked up my phone and I checked my email and I checked my text and say we're filling all that time with our devices in Dover really losing our ability to sit alone with our thoughts and have a lot of cases to interact with the human being that's sitting near us and so just kind of thinking about how that creates a lack of the thinking Christ and then the Allen is our personal growth into this is something that we all kind of know but I think it's a nice reminder or for the adults to kind of stop and think about think about how that affects us and then you know remember they are and they're developing brain and what that what that means for them so social emotional health is his parents and his teachers that you know how are we what are we doing to help our children develop that and so what that technology can do for that social emotional health isn't creating that addiction to connecting with each other and do for the older children the teenagers you know they are Tethered to their devices and they're hoping they can make that connection and then it creates the multitasking perfect where we are really able to do teenagers young children aren't really able to be super present and engaged in one thing and they're and they're peeking and every parent I'm sure can think of those times where you're at watching TV but then they also want to grab a tablet or you know do something else or you know even my baby is one and he'll grab my phone and so it just kind of create this the Peaks and valleys nothing affects their their emotions in there so informational health and Joe Walsh at bu I saw her speak the few years ago to conference she talked about this kind of like stress stupid so we have been you know these kids that are that are stressed and it's really easy for us to blame the tech right but it but it is just one ingredient and so just thinking about how are we allowing our kids to kind of self medicate right and a furnace tape and so that that idea that we want to make sure that we're monitoring it and we're checking in on it because Tech in short bursts 20 minutes at a time can be really helpful and it can really help our kids manage their anxiety or theirs or their need to know kind of detach for a minute take a break and so just as the adults stopping and asking are we modeling that but also are we giving them the tools so that they can kind of come I understand that that is the best way for them to use their technology so even with our three-year-old and our young kindergartener do you know right now as the parents we really continue to kind of set those boundaries in and create that we're hoping that what we're doing is setting them up with it when they are old enough to be making their own decisions they're making those healthy digital decision moving forward you these five words phrases in emotions are what we really want for our children right we wanted to be self-aware we want them to be able to self-regulate related and what all the research shows and what a lot of experience as parents I'm sure he's shown us that is that when our kids are using technology too much right and it's not being done in a healthy way then it's going to diminish the stop awareness weekend there's ability to self-regulate diminishes their use of social skills because they're not being social and there are still no signs of undermining their ability to be empathetic because of that lack of actual connection and then sunk their motivation and so I just think at this is always really liked a strong point for me is if he asked you know asking yourself what do we want for children and then realizing that that you know over use of Technology can really stand in the way and kind of fun do a lot of the work that we're doing here at Virginia chance school with with our students every single day and I'm in the house are you at home and so I think it's I think it's really interesting to think about technology by 10 years ago versus now because you know as a parent as an adult doing it with my kids to it's almost like my attitude is too kind of demon eyes it even though I rely on it you know so much and I use it so much when my kids bring it up I just want to like how it's so bad it's all bad go outside right now I think we're going to have to change the narrative a little bit and and talk with our with our kids and let them know that they can be helpful in here the way that is helpful in this as the technology specialist to have kindergarten through 5th graders and we do a lot of talking about would you a digital citizenship program when we we talked about all the ways we want of you know be a part of an online community but we also talked about how or technology is helpful and how we can use it in a helpful way in a positive way and I think that it's important that conversation at home so it's helpful when we use it in short bursts a lot of our kids these days are overloaded with extracurriculars and they might need that time that break to pull back when they're not because they're constantly you know on the go it's it's a great we know it's a great way to connect with other people that are outside of our immediate environment you know grandparents who don't live in state family members who don't live in stay friends who have no change schools as our as our kids get older so we know that's really strong and positive I'm going to wait for us really Foster those relationships with with the social media World which is so changing but there's ways that kids can show support for each other and I'm really kind of help promote that empathy if they're if they're shown how to to do that online in a Safeway and then motivation and inspiration there's always a cute little kind of like movement where a parent who was giving her daughter Instagram for the first time ever follow five motivational count Freight that's what you're seeing on your feed and so w i mean I find a lot of parenting advice right online and through those channels and so we know that could be helpful and information management in this is just you know you know your cat I have I have two kids are going to have a kindergartener and a third grader so they're coming of that age where they want to be on screens and they want to use iPads and they think they want to play video games and all that but the the two of them are very different and the way that technology affect my third grader and her mood is very minimal compared to my kindergarten my kindergartener who is pretty immediately affected by by the analogy and so I just think it's interesting to think about how it's not a blanket statement necessarily we do this or we don't do this but getting to know your child and talking with them really helping them and then there's no reason to pause on allergy usually usually in my house with someone you know starts yelling or has them for the Outburst about something and I'm like oh I think we need to get off her screens right and so just being able to be aware that when when Mike when your kid don't want to go outside or when friends are walk in and they don't want to interact with those people like that the time for us to stop and pause and kind of think about maybe how we could be doing this differently if your kids are sleeping but we're going to talk about sleep in a minute sleep is a play sound portent for so many reasons and it could be that if your if your children are on their devices later into the evening or if what they're watching is sticking in their in their minds. Is it something to consider and find reason to if you know kids who struggle offline and are most likely going to bring those struggles into a digital space as well as another kind of social community and so if they're your child is having a lot of negative digital fractions that you know the idea of cyberbullying that would be a place to pause and then that excessive rumination looking back at all this negative experience a little bit more time kid to have gotten into like more of the gaming and in the chat and what not but I do think it's really important to kind of think about him like it is offline and is going to you know be somewhere to be my kid is online and so I'm being Mindful and aware of that enter which sleep we want you know we hear about the blue light and now everybody wears blue light blockers and we're starting to learn that maybe that is not as good for us and so or our kids in the reason that we want to limit that technology time in the evening is because that blue light before bed can kind of make you feel like jet lag and I'm sure every adult can relate to a time where you kind of went down the rabbit hole when you and you're bad and you check your phone and then all the sudden I was so tired now I'm not or I just feel cloudy and Stacy and so the same thing is happening to our kids if we're just letting them do that screen time before bed and does the blue light actually released blocks the release that your melatonin which is going to make you more alert and then it kind of throws everything off and so do we want to be really mindful of that it's time consumption a lot of times it gets us emotionally worked up depending on what your child is doing even if they're gaming right now can I get them in a different place and not help a man that whines down so we recommend always to have a device curfew or and also to make sure your devices are put in your children's room the iPads in my house come into my room and they you know they go they go away basically before dinner time and the kids know that and so it's just as nice my kids aren't old enough yet to try to be sneaky I'm sure all that will change when we move into the next day life but for now they understand that that's just something that we don't do after dinner and then we talked about why and so I feel like a little help me get better sleep do a device check before bed that's just to sit for adults and then turning off those notifications notifications especially for young kids that I think that kind of it contributes to that addiction to feeling like you're missing out on something what's going on in this world in this digital face that I'm I'm not that I'm not a part of it so if you all all the apps all the games right they come with those notifications and just turning this off to that your kids can do present in what they're doing when they're doing it on but also so that like their device is not being in the other room and and distracting them so I read from multiple sources different different suggestions on when before bed to cut it off and I think especially for young kids I think I've always I read somewhere that 2 hours is really what you want to do I think for adults obviously that doesn't always feel realistic and so trying to think really intentionally about where your kids are using their devices and even if they are getting some of that I Pad Thai tablet time TV time before bed you know maybe it's in a common space in the den and we're all there together at supposed to laying in our bed with that before they before lights off in 30 minutes is kind of the the goal of giving them their brains a total break before before that bedtime I think that I think as a parent it can be really hard to for me when I get new information about technology guidelines and awareness in the mindfulness and I realize that my kids are doing something that they shouldn't be doing and that happens to me probably like every month I feel like I have to check back in with and it and it kind of mystical like when we're home for holidays and we're on a week-long a fool it's very different my kids kind of wear me down and then they get more screen time then I would like for them to have and so I think it's apparent when I like this quote it is apparent I think it's always a nice reminder that it's okay it's okay for our kids to be a little disappointed and it's okay for them to be bored and anxious I think long and we are walking through that with them right we're not just saying no and I'm not telling you why and it's because I said so we're moving on but we can acknowledge that they're upset we don't need to lecture then we don't need to tell them about what we remember when we kids and how one day they will understand right but just kind of distant there with them and to let him know like this is hard and so you know checking in through that disappointment but I but I think it's always nice that the parents know okay to disappoint them in this face because we do also know you know what the what it is worth our long-term goal is and we're trying to help them become and we're trying to help them become you know digital citizen two can make healthy decisions on their own and don't need us to to do that for them last week with a Bridget I think maybe Andy dr. Becky on Instagram great phrase that she said she loved with young children as well as how old are children in maybe you guys know this already something like I know you wish and now you wish you could stay on your computer longer but it's time to go to bed and tips and tricks every day good inside but then we're here for text she is lovely to follow for quick resources on Instagram so I get that to my I get that and I drop it eye doctor Becky Fuller cuz I'm not always in a place where I can read it but then I've had some tough times where I go back to that folder and I find a title you know or a subject line that talks to what's going on for me in that moment so yeah I think dr. Becky is super helpful in shoes really good at helping when your kids are having really big feeling and how to navigate through that and really had to like sit with them in those in those times that I do I love I love. Becky is well and so I think I thought this was this was this is always thought I'd like the harder thing to hear it took a little bit of time with my husband Union but if we want to talk are children screen time we have to talk about our screen time right and the way that we're using our technology and so if it kind of you know if we're going to have to tell her no it's almost like we need to say no to ourselves first and I know that there are you know other reasons we're not going in there watching YouTube videos right like our kids might want to be doing but just but trying to have those regular in person talk letting your child leave the conversation letting them talk to you about what they like and how it makes them feel and then really just helping them with that metacognition and we talked about metacognition a lot in elementary and the really big part of you no children learning how to read when we talk about are different zones of Regulation really being able to think about our thinking knowing what works best for us in any environment and then helping them just identify those those triggers right and that really starts with you modeling for them with that language right and so you know I know sometimes in my house is it looks like it's It's Crazy Ray's running around need some everybody needs something different and usually those times I'm probably sitting there on my phone trying to do a text or connect with something and then if I snap or if I talk in a way that it doesn't feel good for my kids like to be able to stop and say wow I didn't handle that well on my phone down right now turn it off I'm going to send it in the other room so that we can go back and we can we can do that over again or to say I just got an email that has made me feel stressed right and that's why my mood has just changed and so just really like our phones aren't going away and is the parents you know I don't think it's realistic to say we're not going to I'm not going to have my phone at home right and so instead it just to let them know what we're doing with our phones and why using them and how are using them but also that we are also working on how to manage that technology cuz looking for myself I'm always constantly trying to figure out ways do last write on my phone and be more present it's a family meeting sorry doesn't deserve me and their family meetings are great and just make sure that when you if you have a family meeting you know it we weave let the kids the children leave the conversation we had them here's the problem I'm seeing here's what I'm noticing what do you noticed you know and they love to my kids love to call me out and call my husband out on how we are misusing technology is well and you know to be able to hear that and be like wow I didn't realize that you were even talking to me and Mommy and Daddy do differently and then what can you all do differently and we agree on as a family that's going to make our time together here at home more enjoyable but also our time on our devices more enjoyable and I'm outside and do in that often comes with your help we can do on our play some in Houston tech free activities just make sure I always have like a list going on my phone just because even though I know there's a million things to do. On technology when I'm sitting there and my kids are like so what are we going to do they all fly out of my head right and so there's some resources at the end that give you some great ideas on all that so in for that conversation this is just kind of questions if you're looking for ideas on a house believe that when the twins when they're using their technology so how do you want to use this platform what do you like about this after this video game what goes well for you what's hard for you and that's kind of that moment where we share that's right and then kind of just help them work through that I know my 3rd grader is she's my oldest and so it's the first time I'm kind of like mrs. I'll start talking about something Dora is an end on the sewing so told her it's totally true and so we kind of work through that and if you know how to help her understand this new world and then asking them I need to think about what can we do when we are triggered by our technology when we see a video we don't like or a video that scares us or the other makes us feel sad or what if I lose the game what if my what is my iPad eyes in the middle of whatever I'm doing right like how am I going to are we going to deal with that and so and just remembering, thinking back at very very dr. Becky not to lecture because they do I'm right we were kind of talking talking at them all day long and so not to laugh like sure we can make suggestion based off our experience with really trying to let them come up with that would fit with those ID and sometimes they give my kids give suggestions and I think to myself that it's not going to work and then I'll watch it work that you know and it's like oh okay well they know they know themselves better than I do I love the idea of  three times and spaces or my kids you know the the tablets aren't going to go away and I and I know that it's unrealistic to say we have no iPads ever and so I love the idea that we have certain times where where where where there are no devices and that's that's an adult thing as well right there being able to say that if it's not a time that Mommy and Daddy are on their phones it's not a time that we're answering emails do some suggestions from great article in the New York Times picking up or dropping off your children at school at the transitional time they're getting in the car you know trying to end phone calls before hand put your phone down and then that time to drive is kind of that time to have that conversation after you know if you're a parent who works out of the house and then coming home from work using that trying to set that time but a timer however it works best to kind of reconnect and check in on everyone's day I kneel I know I'm very much someone who in the past has brought the iPad to dinner because it makes dinner easier and everyone can sit there but really trying to sit and engage with the kids if the alarm you'll go a lot faster because I don't hand everybody a device but our meals is also gotten a lot better for your family it's not it's not an all of this list. just so you know I was trying to decide what they had to eat an elephant is one bite at a time pick one thing one small thing that you can do and then see how that feels and then Miss America read this article in this is I know our parents on right now or younger but I think it really applies to kids of all ages but I read this article and it was called what the most important thing you can do in this game your child and so dr. Joe Walsh became to a conference and she went to a couple of her sessions and I was really just taken by you know her everything she said in her take on technology is it a lot of words on a slide but I just wanted to kind of walk through what what she said her stay that's were and so she said why gaming yes fortnite is good for your child or at least better than you think and so she went through this with her son who was before 10 years old and do she basically said we need to play these games with our child and engage when we do that so take the time to sit down to ask questions and then let your child be the expert on that game where that video or whatever it is and then being able to have that follow-up conversation what tell them what you liked about the game so dig deep sometimes and and really try to find some positive though the graphics were really cool I really loved the way that you added all those details on your drawing different unit with with all the different half and then asking them what have you gotten better at since you started playing this game and then stupidly obvious it was 49 did you try out different strategies when you don't win because once again as adults were really caught up in this narrative there's nothing positive in these games and I am very guilty that's my my daughter doesn't we have any interest in my kindergartener he thinks he wants to play video games because he has an older cousin who plays video games and so it's a constant struggle for me because my he mentioned it and I can like feel my whole body go stiff and I'm immediately like no this is so bad so bad right now but really if you think about it when they're in these games there's a lot of creative problem-solving there's there's working together there's you know some optimism depending on the game there's a termination there's communication and so if we can start that conversation with them then later on and another time you can kind of follow back up and you can apply those positive Damon kill to their offline life right and that she was saying her son was trouble the group project and she was able to say hey I noticed it when you were playing fortnite you and the guy you were talking to communicate so well and you listen to his you know the gestiones so maybe you could do that in your group project as well and so just trying to help make those connections that the skills they're using in a game can also be used in a lot of ways offline so that was that was kind of a new interesting cake that really helped me look at the hole gaming World differently cuz I'm not I'm not someone who grew up playing video games and so that's kind of new territory for me as a parent did you contact them take take away their thinking about you know what's going to work for you at home as you all come up with your plan one screen at a time is always a great suggestion for adults or teenagers for super young children right but this you know we live in this world now where it's like we brag about how we can multitask right and how we can do all these things at one time and so just to be mindful of that because it's a rumor multitasking like we're never really doing one thing we're just doing a lot of things and so making sure that that what we're modeling to our children is is the same that we want to explore if we're engaged in an activity going to be present for that activity right that's a hard thing if I met one of my kids game pick it up if we're watching a really trying to commit to that that one friend I'm turning off notifications that can be so helpful because there's notifications are so distracting the text three times and faces and then just as always like the adults that I'm betting that example and I love the second to last one there like the demonizing over self-control and I can just like here times that I've done this to in my own house about how surprised I am that my five-year-old you know when I didn't say then took took more time on his iPad or you know how he's been using it too much and I just think it's we really have to stop and remember that we struggle with technology is ever-changing and I I think most of us would are able to say yes I have to stop myself and say hey I'm going to put down my Instagram for the month or personally you know you can go into your settings now and you can set your time limit or certain on your phone and so I have my time limit set for all these different apps to one hour a day and then after 1 hour a day I can't get on this app anymore and that's just a way you know for me to have self-control but just just remembering that we are adults in our brains are pretty fully developed and these are children or young and they're figuring all this out and so we just want to figure it out with them we just want to help them we want to give them the language and really model for them what that looks like and doing it with your kids I did this and I watched YouTube videos that you know that the watch some YouTube videos with my son and it was really fun and he watches videos of kids playing football and then he sits there and played football in self and he told me why he liked it and he liked it cuz he said he's getting better at football and you know I mean it was it was the moment and so now every time he turns it on he's like look mama this guy again and so it's like he wants to connect it to me and he wants me to do it with him and so just really taken the time some time to kind of sit down and engage with them on what they like even though I feel silly silly to ask here at school we do we use common sense media and that is where we learn about digital citizenship am I the kindergarten classes when they come to me and Technology we learn about this they have great little video is the and things and songs and so we sing the songs together just because I start thinking about that online community and then it's also a great place to go for articles for parents and apni movie you can go on Common Sense Media and type it in and they will they will tell you you know what the age appropriateness and had to give you that rating on it so if you're ever wondering about that that's a great green sanity and other Instagram handle to follow I would definitely follow dr. Becky good inside I should I should add that to this resource is she fabulous but then Instagram screen is another great one and it is geared toward parents obviously and it's for all ages and it's just helpful tips on on how we can how we can do that how we can create Bobby Digital Citizen and then how we as parents can make sure that were modeling that and helping her are just a few other articles I put on here for the older kids that you know cell phone went to do that the responsibility that comes with that how there's a guy down there to helping protect your children's privacy online so if you have a lot of Sakura you want anyone else and that that might be helpful I get that question a lot and just an article on boredom isn't a bad thing I love to I love to push that idea that like her kids should get bored sometimes you know that that's when they get create if that's when they go kind of explore and find something else but they're not used to doing and so was a good connection to the idea of technology that was a lot of me talking and kind of find free stuff any questions or comments or anything that resonated with you that you think will be helpful and you will be able to apply in your home where on the older side of of this adventure getting into the upper grades of Elementary and we I was really really resistant to the video games we have a little boy and he is just her 10 but my husband wasn't so much because he had grown up doing more than I had when I was growing up and really thought that it was a fun addition to his life so he introduced him a little bit earlier than I would have wanted him to to video games but what was interesting and what he modeled for me was that he sat and played with Bastian and they would have like a raucous time just the other day he was on and was inside of a game and the game had a pretty intense puzzle component to it that was a surprise at the time and a lot of these games do and he asked for help and we came in as a complete family to help complete really intricate puzzle I mean it was like a mind my little puzzle and it was just so fun and rewarding for us and it was something that I resisted so strongly because I had so much beer wrapped around it and yes we've had to manage it and we had to say you know no you don't get to quote and quote wreck the board if something doesn't go right so it's been a lot of Hands-On coaching and we make sure that those games are played in our public space of our house I'm so that were completely always aware and have visual on that but it's been something where I was at first resisting and now through being able to like really manage it as a family and also then engage as a fee only has been kind of a rewarding entry into that phase of kid hood for little boys I love that it's awesome and Deer Valley anything for you guys that you like about the session or questions or just thought you want us to know thank you for myself and my wife we have a 2 year old and we're just now starting to think through technology massage that was great to hear and we don't use a lot of Technology yet but I do have two stepchildren to our teenagers that are present at sporadically and I think currencies him a lot you same as he sort of Taken 2 a little water toys with the Rings and he pushed the buttons he's calling that his phone that's kind of break that out when they're on their phone and I haven't he's really want to say he's jealous that they they have phones and devices and we can't really restrict them and using them but I see they're setting an example for him and you know if we can come up with some more rules of the times when we're going to make sure all phones are put away we need to work on that a bit but also yeah it's I know everything says that you really should not be too mean screen tonight before bed and that's actually the only time that Kerwin does get screen time is kind of mixed in with our bedtime routine is he can shark videos on YouTube a lot of times it is like a song or just body painting and it's pretty calm a relaxing but I'm not really sure how we can let himself have that but move it to a different time well and I think you know I think there's plenty of there's all the like guidelines out there but you know I think if I think it's what you would have to figure out what works for you know you know maybe moving at 2 right before we get in the bath you know I'm even just like 20 minute difference I think is I mean I let you know it's fall asleep with iPads in their bed InStyle I think it's just again being aware we can't we can't like as a parent in general you know it's like we can't do it all we can't be the best in all of these areas but what always helps me is it ain't okay I I'm I'm trying it something right like I'm trying my best too to help my children learn how to be successful capable young people and I think it's like I'm very transparent with them when I've put a boundary or a rule in place and it's not working and we're going to redo it right back and say hey that didn't work I'm now learning that what I set up here is it best for us and here's why so let's try how could we change that right always trying to ask them if they can come up with the idea to get a little more by in and then and you know and you still get pushed back but just knowing that you're going to invite them into that process and then do those changes and not going to and no one's going to do it right the first time it's not going to be perfect but also you know hoping that down the line they'll be able to stay as make their greater will now say and she loves to say it about her brother like you know I think William should only have 30 minutes because he gets really angry when he you know is doing this and that and it's like oh thank you do you know everything I've been trying to do for that validation of I noticed that too so how can we help him you know come up with other other strategies are other ways that he could do use this technology and so I think that's kind of makes it the more important goal that how does parents is just too kind of hope that when it comes to this technology because it's only you know as a parent of a third grader and I know like Olivia with the 10-year old it's like it defir and the anxiety that kind of like Lynn thinking about what comes next at every age and every grade middle school and beyond that that is is really is real and so it's like hoping to lay the ground work now but it were having this conversation and we are able to have what's going to be even harder conversations right as a as they move into those teenage years and I think also too I'm not saying to it but I'm but I would say since you have off kids in the house from time to time we actually do too and yes their parties are going to be different than you and your partner's priorities for your child so you can say you know you noticed y'all down the life I noticed that you've seen how such and such interacts with their device we're going to try to do it a little differently because we want to have this type of experience with you and so but not necessarily saying hey I'm aware have you noticed and I think we're going to try us to do something a little bit different but we still want you to have those fun experiences when you get older but we're going to do it the way that works best for family and hopefully that might be helpful as he as as a age up when they're seeing that emulated inside the house from an older sibling and I think he would also be very receptive to it but you know I approach him and say what will this is why we don't want to do it do you have a suggestion and Kerwin would love to yeah I could be tested
