everybody I'm Betsy fit on the head of school here at Virginia chance school and today I want to talk to you about one of our strategic plan pillars is the pillar for the eib J which is diversity equity and inclusion longing and justice dipg executive summary in this show you some examples to our classroom and all that we do here a chance and one of the lessons to be child-centered and developmentally appropriate and that applies to BJ work this well will show you how it shows up terms of the materials in the classrooms the way we engage our family activities in the field trips in the Community Partnership it's important to us not only in a classroom level but it starts at our board level that is just for pipj leadership at the fourth level and implementation from twos all the way to grade five we also seek to expand Partnerships in the community and demographic Pierre school to Montrose Graphics in the greater Lewisville Community we have made progress but we have work to do in Louisville there's about a 30% non-white demographic and a chance school for our staff 15% and for Family Sports 7% so we're proud of those numbers that we continue through our marketing and omissions effort to ask seek to recruit diverse staff and Families do earlier near the teachers pad I'm sharing with one another the way that their divj work shows up in the classroom and as I listened to their presentations and saw their work or four themes really emerged and the person wants connection it really starts the way that we connect with our families here a chance is by inviting us to classroom learning learning about our families through survey and conversations we also want to make sure that there is representation and your classroom the book activities and then we want to create a meeting truly encouraged children's head ask questions and hear different perspective so that's face-to-face with learning I'm engaging Washington Ford. In our preference again and look for things that we see in a classroom so I'll share with you today learning connecting representing and engaging start with our Pikachu friends Kristen beautiful pictures from the classroom we're told her encouraged to bring in posters that they're all about their families their cultures their Traditions the things that they celebrate I think they value and they wants to know a little bit about the families and their will share with us then we can invite them into the classroom and in our Tuesday we really want children to be themselves and the others in the classroom so we make sure we have a variety of materials and books and Dolls to represent all the different cultures in the world and hear a chance School 4 + pk3 you'll stay here we've done some learning about our families and it was invited them in to talk about Hanukkah on the far bottom and on the top to talk about Lunar New Year and we love it when family can come in and share some of their cultural Traditions with us and we can all learn and grow together representative your life experiences for the children have this windows and mirrors in the world a Nerf wars they made a beautiful family tree so that we can get to know their families in the classroom and again duct on Bear Valley Central issue with our Ford family and they're representing an engaging we are a play-based preschool and then we get before he start to see some more traditional academics like a crossing a large and that's what you see on the timeline is children aren't sharing different holidays or events are important to them but they get that Continuum of time and then below you start spear drawings to come a little bit more sophisticated with the letters showing up Atlas in the bottom and then again the crafting is part of their soft start in the morning to learn about each other and learn to recognize and celebrate and honor differences among people forced to go to kindergarten which is where the elementary school starts you're a chance School I'm in kindergarten the same themes are there learning in connecting with you but that's where I want to invite parents in or children whose parents of the things that are important to their home in elementary a little bit more use of technology which you see on the top with a little girls sharing pictures of her home and herself that we can learn and then on the bottom has come into share a part of the family celebration at school representing and engaging in academics become more sophisticated in elementary school and the sensors and so that is what you see here in Ark enter Black History Month this year we did an author study for the children discovered this type of pointillism recreated it making a beautiful picture of Jan school together at the bottom and watching your videos again technology primary for us it's great to have to multi-age classrooms or some second grade and again learning and connecting again we're learning about our family through survey part of our celebration for something that is or value to them as well family coming in to celebrate connect been part of our community richness and then representing engaging you'll see the writing is a lot more sophisticated in primary they moved onto journals and their artwork be also more sophisticated BJ work in primary about Black History Month and again primary doing is Wally celebration and grading it into all the different first of academic intermediate here a chance school that's a great three and four and again we have to multiply three four classes and Here Again Estate parents coming in we're learning about different families were connecting with them in the PE class they started to do more conversations around not calling that you boys are girl girl push-ups on your knees or out in the woods a racial Equity as well student leadership on the left that says release the last time with his fall women were focused on identity for which one's positive affirmations really started think about who we are as people and what values are important to us and then sharing that representing and engaging a calendar every month different cultural events that are happening and learning for example. they learned about the Wally they also learn about Navajo language is so can you just see the level of literacy and economic integration just to get gets me even more sophisticated as as children get older Temple Emanuel. Not everybody is the same as different perspectives challenges different ways of being in the world and the fifth grade that's our oldest class here at chance to London before they graduate Anza Middle School and they really the truth we really thought themselves as advocates and activists for the work that we do here in and they were definitely our first goal as well so we started out learning about our families connecting with them and they also took time to the lot with identity mapping again just understand who they are their values who they are rich people and having a little bit more sophisticated conversations again they can explore some of their Natural Curiosity about life and really be prepared for that next up at Middle School need to be attended emaps that created about themselves thoroughly learned about themselves share with others Canada morning message rinse off start learning about different people in the world and having those windows and mirrors tomorrow morning meeting messages were they draw from rgi BJ calendar each month when they also have books in the classroom picture books where they can experience different cultures and it really takes place and then have conversation and just learned about different ways of being in the world elevator just come in the book that the Traders had in their classroom different perspectives and resources and see the world from another emigrated also in social studies unit that they do to learn about some of the different cultures and world and some different perspectives on history also did this year was they got away from the campus and started going out and explore the world of Greater Louisville Community they learn about food deserts the inequity of distribution in the world and when I see things that are bright orange you know how to take it they can learn about history as far as how we are where we are in the world now they also learn the prospective Milan and understand what is a good source for information one isn't it how to triangulate data and really have their facts before forming an opinion and you also see how to duplicate the academic come integrating technology they're doing research project presentation Tuesday at that level of academic I think we have specialists Auburn Elementary School can visit East science art music library technology and they also really take the divj working for the earlier if they had a lot conversation around you no expectations for girls do what boys do and try to neutralize that within the specialist class and again offer lots of variety books different cultures and then just tell me when we're outside having no gender specific expectations an enchantment in Richmond Camp after school program we really started to look at that as a great way for community outreach to connect with other partners in the local community and we had lots of different offerings this year and then why can't we took the opportunity to honor the Juneteenth holiday this summer as respectful as the can is this picture is a bear fur to grow its we just went over to visit with about food desert. Not everybody has to world where how do we help for handicapped passionists VIP chaquira chance school we feel like we've made a lot of progress we know we have a lot of work to do we are looking at will have a new t.i.
