An open letter to the donors of Virginia Chance School,

We moved to Louisville in 2021 largely for the best education opportunities.  We have found exactly what we were seeking and more at Chance, so I would like to personally thank you for your generosity in making this opportunity accessible and inclusive for my family.  The 2024-2025 school year will be daughter’s fourth year at Chance, and it has really proven to be a learning environment where my daughter has thrived.  While she could succeed academically in many forms of education, I value that she is blossoming under Chance's whole-child philosophy and social-emotional curriculum.  She is a creative self-starter who is gaining a broader perspective of herself and the world around her, including her peers and people from different cultures, and it has fostered an appreciation of how we can be good stewards of nature.

Furthermore, through class discussions and the friendships she has made, she not only learns through the lens of her peers, but she contributes to the conversations by sharing her perspectives as a first-generation Haitian American and a veteran family member with a different socio-economic reality than many students.

Looking to the future, when asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" My daughter always answers the same: "An art teacher at Chance or a school like Chance." While the dreams of children grow and change, I think this answer shows her own realization and appreciation that Chance is a place that shares her values.  By continuing to support her education here, we are also fostering an advocate for progressive education who may help guide the next generation of students.

As a military police veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a Traumatic Brain Injury limits my income primarily to VA compensation. For that reason, the learning environment in which Genevieve is thriving would not be possible without your support.
